Offline feature on specified documents

First of all many thanks for this great app And the offline feature that as was searching for.

Link to this offline feature, does the API of software offer any option to limit the offline data ? Mean if I have 5k documents and I need only 20 in offline mode. It could be really useful to have only the needed one ( base on one option on the document itself or on the saved view option).

Thanks by avance

Hey Lunik971,

thank you for the kind words - and great suggestion! You're right, downloading all 5k documents for offline use isn't practical when you only need a handful.

I have added a "selective offline mode" for the next version, which lets you choose exactly which documents to keep offline. Stay tuned!

Thanks
Björn

Hello Björn / Lunik971,

happy new year and best wishes for 2026. I also trink that it would be a good idea to have some kind of "selective sync" to avoid replication of full server content if only few documents are needed offline on device. For most flexibility I would appreciate either a custom field steering the download (for example "Sync" for all I would like to have offline or a tag that triggers the process like keep all documents offline that have the tag "offline" assigned to them, no matter if it is the invoice of "phone provider A" or "Bank B" or "Insurance 2026". Not sure if technically possible, individual settings per device would be great across the operating systems (e.g. to have health documents offline on the iPad for doctor visit but others offline on Android phone).

Thinking about offline mode there are also security aspects coming to mind in case device is stolen since paperless-ngx does not offer end-to-end encryption but only relies on the underlaying operating system as far as I know (at least I did not find any option for encryption in current version).

regards,
Sven

Hey Sven,

currently we rely completely on the underlying OS (Android, iOS, iPadOS …), which means:

Android: Scoped Storage
Apple: App Sandbox

The lack of encryption is therefore a risk in the following cases:

  • Physical device access (stolen/lost device) (*)
  • Root/jailbreak
  • Forensic analysis (*)
  • Backup extraction (e.g., unencrypted iTunes backup)

*: The weakness here is the OS and its protection mechanisms (PIN, biometrics, etc.).

I added encryption to my research list.

For the automatic sync feature you have good points. I can think of another extension of the offline mode, which lets you select conditions (like tags, custom fields, etc.) for selecting the documents that are automatically synchronized.

Best regards,
Björn
